The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has created a online Electric Bicycle Safety Course to help protect commuters and recreational riders.

“With so many people discovering e-bikes, we partnered with Governor Newsom’s Administration, the Legislature, and safety advocates statewide to develop California’s first e-bike safety and training program,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Our goal is to make sure everyone who chooses this alternative mode of transportation can do so safely.”

Thanks to Assembly Bill 1946, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom and effective January 1, 2023, the CHP created a comprehensive online training program covering e-bike safety, emergency maneuver skills, the rules of the road, and applicable e-bike laws. This interactive program features easy-to-understand tutorials, videos, quizzes, and practical safety tips presented in an engaging and accessible way.

E-bikes are generally heavier and faster than standard bicycles, and without proper training, riders face a higher risk of severe injury or even death in a crash. As these bikes become more common, it’s essential for all road users to understand how to safely share the streets.

Recent preliminary data from the California Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System shows more than 9,600 bicycle-involved crashes occurred in 2022, including at least 225 involving e-bikes—four of which resulted in fatalities. This marks a significant increase from 80 e-bike crashes reported the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for better education and awareness.

The CHP’s online training program is designed for riders of all ages and experience levels, helping them spot potential hazards and teaching proven techniques for safe riding and hazard-avoidance maneuvers.

This program was made possible through collaboration with a diverse group of safety partners, including bicycle safety organizations, government traffic safety agencies, and injury-prevention experts from hospitals statewide. Together, they support the CHP’s ongoing commitment to keeping all road users safe.

If you ride an e-bike, or know someone who does, don’t wait—take the CHP’s online e-bike safety course today and ride with confidence.

We strongly encourage all e-bike riders — and drivers who share the road with them — to visit chp.ca.gov/, click on the Programs & Services tab, and then select Vulnerable Road Users to take advantage of this free resource.
